Aero Dream - Data Sculpture of the Wind

A memory of the wind over Scandinavia, painted from 12 months of collected wind speed data from Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Inspired by dreams of flying along jet streams across the Earth, Aero Dream is a short vignette of the serene and turbulent flows as air current converge and collide.
Wind speed datasets sourced from Kjeller Vindteknikk
The power of the wind is colossal, with a single thunderstorm capable of generating hundreds of megawatts of energy in 24 hours. This powerful nomadic element offers us a timeless reminder of the shared breath between humanity, and the ever-changing winds that traverse our world, touching all forms of life.
Dynamic shifts in energy as light from outside fades, and the energy within the canvas illuminates, revealing a powerful force contained within.
Created using Unreal Engine 5, wind speeds are provided by Norwegian meteorological data from 2023 to 2024. This data drives the coloration and velocity of a custom Niagara Fluid Simulation, rendering over 12 million active particles in one simulation. The goal was to explore the intersection of visceral human perception of the elements, and the dataset inputs feeding into the data sculpture.
Data is only part of the story. Information is moot without context for how we connect and relate to this information. When we deeply engage the senses as a more visceral experience, a deeper connection to the story is made, and a shift in understanding begins.
